The Story of Ibrahim Guleed

In 2016, Ibrahim Guleed* was like many young Somali men trying to escape fear and uncertainty. Life in Somalia had become dangerous as Al-Shabaab attacks increased across the country. Security forces responded with aggressive crackdowns, leading to random arrests and growing suspicion everywhere.

At the time, Ibrahim was in Bosaso preparing travel documents to flee to Yemen as a refugee. He hoped to leave behind the violence and begin a safer life. But before those plans could become reality, his life took a devastating turn.

One day, security officers arrested him in the street without warning.

He was accused of being linked to Al-Shabaab, even though he had no chance to defend himself. Before he could explain who he was, he was transported more than 700 kilometers away to a prison in the dry and scorching Guban region.

The prison felt like the end of the world.

Temperatures in Guban often rose above 40 degrees Celsius. The land was harsh, empty, and unforgiving. Because he was accused of terrorism, Ibrahim was placed alone in a small room, separated from everyone else. Days turned into months, and months into years.

No relatives came to visit him. No friends searched for him. For four and a half years, nobody even knew where he was.

Loneliness became his daily companion. Silence filled the walls of his prison cell. The only item prison officers allowed him to keep was a small radio. Perhaps they intended it to help him hear news from outside the prison walls. But what seemed ordinary would become the instrument God used to save his life.

Every evening, Ibrahim tuned through crackling shortwave frequencies. In the remote Guban region, shortwave signals were often the only broadcasts beaming across the horn of Africa. He listened to different broadcasts simply to escape the silence.

Then one evening, his hands stopped turning the dial. Through the static came a calm voice speaking in his own Somali language. The message was unlike anything he had heard before. It spoke about God with peace, compassion, and truth. The program was Trans World Radio’s Thru the Bible (TTB).

Something touched his heart.

Night after night, Ibrahim returned to the same station. Alone in his prison cell, he began listening faithfully as the Bible was explained in a simple and personal way. The radio slowly became more than entertainment. It became his teacher, his comfort, and his connection to hope.

For one and a half years, he followed the broadcasts every evening.

As he listened, the Word of God began changing him from the inside. The bitterness, fear, and anger he carried slowly gave way to peace. In that lonely prison, God was reaching a forgotten man through a shortwave signal crossing deserts and prison walls.

Then one night, everything changed forever.

Deep conviction filled his heart. Unable to resist any longer, Ibrahim fell to his knees and began to pray. He prayed through the night, pouring out his pain, confusion, loneliness, and brokenness before God.

Somewhere in those hours of prayer, Ibrahim surrendered his life to Jesus Christ. For the first time in years, he felt peace. Exhausted, he eventually fell asleep.

The next morning, he was awakened by a knock at the cell. Standing before him was the prison commander. The commander looked at him and simply said:
“Wake up and go. Leave this prison.” Ibrahim could hardly believe it.

Without conditions, without explanation, and only hours after giving his life to Christ, he was released after four and a half years in prison.

Today, Ibrahim Guleed is a devoted Christian who speaks about peace, unity, and reconciliation. Reflecting on his journey, he says:
“Today I am a Christian. I stand for unity and peace. I embrace everyone with open hands. My mind was darkened by ignorance, but now the light of Christ has shone into my life.”

What began as a forgotten prison sentence in the burning wilderness of Guban became the place where God reached a lonely man through a small shortwave radio. When the world abandoned him, God found him. And in the middle of isolation, fear, and silence, the Gospel crossed deserts, prison walls, and hopelessness itself . One Trans World Radio shortwave signal at a time.
